Zhang Zhao (1691-1745), a native of Huating, Jiangsu Province, China, was also known by his sobriquet (Ch., zi) Detian and pseudonym (Ch., hao) Wenmin. In Kangxi 48 (1709), he passed the civil service examination and became an imperial secretary. He was well versed in law and music, and excelled particularly in calligraphy. He studied the calligraphic styles of great masters such as Dong Qichang (1555-1636), Yan Zhenqing (709-85), and Mi Fu (1051-1107). Zhang Zhao himself was considered a master of the classical tiexue ("model book") style of calligraphy.
