Zhang Zhao (1691-1745), whose sobriquet was Detian, used pseudonyms including Jingnan, Tianping Jushi, and Changqing. He became a jinshi ("successful candidate of the national civil service examination held at the imperial capital") in 1709 (Kangxi 48). His calligraphy was highly praised by Emperors Yongzheng (1678-1735, r. 1723-35) and Qianlong (1711-99, r. 1735-95), while others disparaged his works, saying that his style was unrefined.
