Huang Daozhou (1585-1646), whose sobriquet was Youyuan and pseudonym, Shizhai, was born in Tanpu in the province of Fujian, China. He became a jinshi ("successful candidate of the national civil service examination held at the imperial capital") in 1622 (Tianqi 2). He was captured and killed by the army of the Qing Empire at the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Handwriting style reflects Daozhou's upright and honest personality. This work was done in 1644 (Chongzhen 17), the year Li Zicheng (1606-45) took control of Beijing, which makes it a valuable source of information for the study of historical events as well.
