Huang Daozhou (1585-1646), whose sobriquets include Youyuan and Shizhai, was a native of Zhangpu in the province of Fujian, China. He became a jinshi ("successful candidate of the national civil service examination held at the imperial capital") in 1622 (Tianqi 2) and later served as cabinet minister of the Southern Ming dynasty (1644-61). A man of learning well versed in literature and calligraphy, he is counted one of the master calligraphers of the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
