This calligraphy on the preface to Huangting jing (E., Book of the Yellow Court) by Wang Xizhi (307-365) was produced by Lian Tongshu (1723-1815). Lian Tongshu, whose sobriquet was Yuanying, used artist names that included Shanzhou, Buweng, and Xinwu Changweng. He became a jinshi ("successful candidate of the national civil service examination held at the imperial capital") in 1752 (Qianlong 17). He followed the calligraphic styles of Yan Zengqing (709-784?), Liu Gongquan (778-865?), and Mi Fu, and is counted one of four master calligraphers of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
