Wang Duo (1592-1652) was from Mengjin, Henan Province. He is also known by his sobriquet, Juesi, and his style names, Shiqiao and Xueshan Daoren ("Sage of the Snowy Mountain"). He was recognized as one of the master calligraphers of the late Ming (1368-1644) and early Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. This work is a copy of a rubbing of exemplary calligraphy from the "Flock of Geese Notebook" (Ch., Equn tie) by the illustrious Jin-dynasty (265-420) calligrapher Wang Xianzhi (c. 344-388). Wang Duo made this copy at the age of forty-nine, on a summer day in 1640 (Chongzhen 13).
