Wang Duo (1592-1652), the late Ming to early Qing-dynasty calligrapher, was a native of Mengjing, Henan Province. He assumed various pseudonyms, including Juesi, Shiqiao, and Xueshan Daoren. This poem was composed to express his feelings when the Ming dynasty fell and includes an inscription indicating that he presented this poem to a dear old friend.
