This fine painting shows the legendary Zen priest Kensu who is said to have lived in China in the tenth century. In the midst of catching shrimps by a river stream, the figure is executed in quick, calligraphic inkstrokes and ink washes. The bag-like shape of the figure is representative of Kaihō Yūshō’s style.
