This is a copy of Eika taigai (E., Poetry Composition Handbook), which is said to have been written by Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241) for Cloistered Prince Sonkai, the son of Emperor Gotoba (1180-1239, r. 1183-1198). The attached note tells us that it was granted by Retired Emperor Reigen (1654-1732, r. 1663-87) to a certain family in the third month of 1702 (Genroku 15) as a congratulatory gift for promotion. Emperor Reigen was accomplished in waka ("Japanese poem") composition and was known for his mastery of calligraphy.
