Emperor Reigen (1654-1732, r. 1663-87), whose given name was Satohito, was the 19th son of Emperor Gomizunoo (1596-1680, r.1611-29). He ascended the throne following his brother, Emperor Gosai (1637-85, r. 1654-63). Reigen studied calligraphy under his father and his works are characterized by sophisticated and clean brushstrokes. He mastered waka ("Japanese poem") composition under the instruction of Reizei Tamemura (1712-74).
