This early manuscript of the unsigned fifteenth segment of Kokin wakashû (E., Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems) was copied by Hon'ami Kôetsu (1558-1637). Chalked paper with a design of arabesques in mica is used for the work, similar to the kind of paper used for Saga-style books made in the 16th and early 17th centuries. Judging from the flowing and elegant handwriting style, Kôetsu probably did this calligraphy during the Keichô era (1596-1615), when he would have been in his fifties.
