This Red Raku tea bowl is said to be the work of Hon'ami Kôetsu (1558-1637). Kôetsu was active in many of the applied arts over a long period of time and studied ceramic techniques with the second and third generation Raku heads, Jôkei (d. 1635) and Dônyû (1599-1656). Though the bowl is unsigned, the underside of its box lid bears an inscription by the twelfth head of the Eiraku Zengorô family, Wazen.
