Arai Hakuseki (1657-1725) was a Confucian scholar and a politician in early-modern times. In this letter, he expresses his appreciation for delicacies that he had received from the master of a plum orchard and talks about his own poems. The phrase, "Yômei saki no sesshô denka," meaning "the former Regent Yômei," probably refers to Konoe Iehiro (1667-1736), and suggests that the letter was written during Hakuseki's last days because Iehiro resigned from the position of sesshô ("regent") in 1712 (Shôtoku 2). It is a valuable source of information for the study of Hakuseki's associations and activities in his last years.
