The Queen Mother of the West was a hermit living in the Kunlun Mountains in China who possessed the elixir of life. This work illustrates the story of King Mu of the Zhou dynasty (c. 1100-256 B.C.), who went to see the Queen Mother of the West, and had such a pleasant time that he forgot to return home. From the seals of Zen'a and Kôboku, it is known that the work was made by Kôboku, the disciple of Sôkei (n.d.). The painting style, with its excessive brushstrokes and lack of refinement, is typical of painters of the Kamakura school.
