Shiokawa Bunrin (1808-77) was a disciple of Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845) of the Shijô school of painting. His fellow disciples included Tanaka Nikka (?-1845) and Shibata Zeshin (1807-91). The best of his own disciples was Kôno Bairei (1844-95). Bunrin painted Arashiyama with cherry blossoms in bloom and Byôdô-in Temple in snow a number of times, and such scenes are flawlessly depicted on the panels of the large-scale folding screens in this masterpiece. Bunrin established the foundations of the Kyoto painting circles in the modern age.
