Sutras copied with gold letters on indigo paper were popular in the late Heian period (794-1185). This edition of the Sutra of the Buddha's Teaching on Amitabha (Skt., Amitabha sutra, J., Bussetsu Amidakyô), one of the three Pure Land sutras, is a Chinese translation of the Sanskrit by one of the most distinguished translators of Chinese Buddhist texts, Kumarajiva (344-413), from the country of Kucha. It describes the Pure Land in the Western Paradise (J., saihô gokuraku jôdo) and encourages the practice of nenbutsu, (the chanting of the Buddha Amida's name, "Namu Amida Butsu") while contemplating the Buddha Amida (Skt., Amitabha). Originally, this elegant scroll, slightly damaged at the top and bottom, is thought to have had a cover, which is now lost.
