Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845) came to Kyoto from Okayama and became a disciple of the realist painter Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811). His landscape paintings, with steady yet sophisticated brushstrokes, were appreciated together with flower-and-bird paintings by his fellow disciple, Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843). Shibata Zeshin (1807-91), a makie artist in Edo (present-day Tokyo) who studied under Toyohiko, introduced the simple but elegant style of the Shijô school of painting to Edo, and had a great influence on Utagawa Hiroshige (1799-1858) and others.
