Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845), a painter from the city of Kurashiki in present-day Okayama Prefecture, went to Kyoto to study under Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811), founder of the Shijô style of painting. Following Goshun's death, Okamoto became a leading figure in the Shijô school; his landscape paintings are held in especially high regard. Among Shijô painters, he is preeminent for the delicacy and precision of his delineation.
Here, he has depicted one boat taking shelter from snow in the shadow of a large rock, and another anchored among the rushes. The painting is suffused with atmosphere.
