The Nagasaki painter Mikuma Shikô (1730-94), also known as Katen, was born in Kaga Province (today southern Ishikawa Prefecture). He first studied under Ôtomo Gekko, who was known for his paintings of animals, but gradually Katen grew dissatisfied with painting animals, both real and imaginary, and began to try his hand at genre paintings. His unusual expression of figures became popular in his day. He was also known for his portraits of eccentrics in Kindai Kijindan (Biographies of Modern Eccentrics) by the poet and Edo-period scholar of Japanese studies, Ban Kôkei (1733-1806).
