Hanabusa Icchô (1652-1724) was arrested and exiled to Miyakejima Island during the Genroku era (1688-1704). It was only after he was pardoned and returned to Edo (present-day Tokyo) that he began using the name, Icchô, and became famous as a genre painter. This work, a masterpiece depicting swallows and willow in flowing brushstrokes, was made prior to his exile. Because Icchô referred to himself as Taga Chôko at the time, the work bears the signature reading "Chôko" and the seal reading "Fujiwara shi.
