Designs of six small boxes housed in this incense utensil box (J., kôbako) symbolize chapters from The Tale of Genji (J., Genji monogatari). Those chapters are The Paulownia Court (J., Kiritsubo), The Bloom Tree (J., Hahakigi), Lavender (J., Wakamurasaki), An Autumn Excursion (J., Momijinoga), The Festival of the Cherry Blossoms (J., Hananoen), and Heartvine (J., Aoi). These boxes were used to organize and store various kinds of incense wood that were very valuable at the time.
