Mirrors began to be decorated around the rim with saw-tooth patterns, spoke patterns, and bead patterns in the late Kamakura period (1185-1333). Such decoration came into style in Japan through the copying of Chinese mirrors from the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220). This trend was also popular in the Southern Song (1127-1279) and Yuan (1277-1368) dynasties in China and the Koryo period (918-1392) in Korea. A movement to restore ancient Chinese culture occurred across East Asia around this period.
