Dark greenish brown in color, this mirror has a thick, straight-sided rim, with a knob surround of flower pistils spread out around a conical knob. A number of similarly patterned mirrors have been excavated from sutra mounds dating to around the late 12th century. One example, from the Inariyama Sutra Mound in Kyoto, closely resembles this museum mirror in diameter and design, although the former has a somewhat narrower rim. The two mirrors may have been made in nearby workshops.
The reflective side of this mirror bears an image of a male deity, his back to a torii shrine gate, executed in fine hairline engraving. The depiction of his face and the folds of his robe are relatively delicate and somewhat similar to the image of a male deity engraved on a mirror excavated from the Kinbusen Sutra Mound in Nara Prefecture. The deity image was probably engraved not long after the mirror itself was made.
