About half of the surface of this greenish brown mirror is veiled with a light green patina. Traces of cloth on both the back and face indicate that it was first wrapped in cloth before being buried in the sutra mound from which it was excavated, at Miroku-dera Temple in the city of Seki, Gifu Prefecture. The straight sides of the rim are of medium thickness. The design composition resembles that of Mirror with Kerria Flowers, Butterflies, and Birds (EK17-47), but a number of elements point to a more strongly pictorial expression overall, including the waves and geese rendered in high relief, and the geese flying in the distance. Along with the simple tortoise-shaped knob, this is a good example of 13th century design sensibility.
