The Kanô school during the late Edo period (1615-1868) was led by the Kanô sub-school of Kobiki-chô, one of four okueshi ("officially employed group of painters") of the Tokugawa government. Isen'in Naganobu (1775-1828) and his son Seisen'in Osanobu (1796-1846) belonged to the Kobiki-chô studio. Kanô Hôgai (1828-88) and Gahô also studied at this studio. In this album, the celebrated places in Japan described in classical Japanese verse are illustrated in the refined yamatoe ("Japanese paintings") style.
