Mori Sosen (1749-1821), a painter from Osaka, studied the Kanô school with his brother, Shûhô (1738-1823). Later, he formed his own style, incorporating the sketch-like techniques of the Maruyama school, based on close observations of nature. Specializing in monkeys, he later changed the first character of his name, so, meaning "ancestor" to "monkey." The deer and monkeys in this painting are executed in composed brushstrokes. Even the cold morning air in the deep mountains of Kasuga can be felt in this realistic depiction.
