Kanô Tan'yû (1602-74), whose given name was Morinobu, was the older brother of Naonobu (1607-40) and Yasunobu (1613-85). They all became okueshi ("official painters of the inner court") for the Tokugawa government. The Edo Kanô ("Kanô school in Edo") in its earliest stage seems to have been led by Tan'yû alone. Although the theme of this work is not uncommon, it is a noteworthy Buddhist painting that Tan'yû made when he was 61-years-old, during his time as a hôgen ("eye of law").
