Hashimoto Gahô (1835-1908) studied at the Kanô sub-school of Kobiki-chô, which was an okueshi ("officially employed group of painters") for the shogunate. Together with Kanô Hôgai (1828-88), he trained the younger generation as head of the school. Although Gahô's style is more reserved compared to that of Hôgai, there is an emphasis on powerful brushstrokes in this work.
