Tosa Mitsuoki (1617-91) came to Kyoto from Sakai, Osaka, with his father, Mitsunori. He was appointed edokoro azukari ("head of the court painting academy") in 1654, and revived the Tosa school that had been inactive since the Warring States period (ca. mid-15th to mid-16th centuries). Mitsuoki did not limit himself to the traditional style of Japanese paintings (J., yamatoe), but assimilated various styles of Chinese and other Japanese paintings. This work is valuable for appreciating the talents of Mitsuoki as an ink painting artist.
