Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843) was born in Kyoto. He was the brother of Goshun (1752-1811), under whom he studied painting. Just as Goshun turned to realist painting after becoming acquainted with Maruyama Ôkyo (1733-95), Keibun also began to produce realistic flower-and-bird paintings. This trend later developed into the establishment of the Shijô school. Light and simple flower-and-bird paintings by artists of the Shijô school began to have a great influence in Kyoto in the final days of the Edo period (1615-1868), and still do at present.
