This painting by the Shijô painter, Keibun (1779-1843), captures a noble man, enjoying a boat ride on a moonlit night and looking as if he were composing a poem. The richness and sense of realism found in works from the Shijô school in Moonlit Boat Ride is diminished, while a more abstract, idealized style of literati painting is emphasized.
