Kanô Tan’yû (1602-74), the grandson of Eitoku (1543-90), was the first to serve as an official painter (J., goyô eshi) for the Tokugawa government. This portrait of Tan’yû is attributed to one of his best pupils, Momoda Ryûei (1647-98) and was passed down in one of the four Kanô lines to serve as official government painters, the Edo Kajibashi Kanô family, which claims its lineage to Tan'yû. This work is said to be a copy of the original, which was destroyed in a fire in 1806.
