This square tile was made in China during the Late Han dynasty (947-950). It bears sawtooth-patterned bands and the four spirits representing star constellations in the four quarters of the universe. The red bird represents constellations in the south, the black tortoise-snake those in the north, the blue dragon those in the east, and the white tiger those in the west. The tile also bears the auspicious inscriptions senshû banzai ("celebrating longevity") in the upper section and chôraku miô ("long pleasure yet to cease") in the lower. The four spirits were a popular motif seen in bronze mirrors from China's late Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), wall paintings of ancient tumuli during Korea's Koguryo period (37 B.C.-668), wall paintings of the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus in Asuka, Nara Prefecture, etc. Some tiles from China's Six Dynasties period (220-589) and wall paintings of ancient burial mounds during Korea's Koguryo period (B.C. 37-668) also bear senshû banzai, depicted with holy animals in iconographic drawings.
