Figurines of people and waterfowls were widely produced in the late Kofun period (ca. 250-ca. 600). Human-shaped figurines include a standing type and a bust type. Busts of female figurines, however, are very rare. Male figurines depict warriors, musicians, peasants, and sumô wrestlers, while female ones represent shrine maidens and women carrying babies in their arms or carrying them on their backs. Human-shaped figurines have been found in large numbers, particularly in the Kantô region. Various combinations of figurines were arranged on top and in front of the tumulus for ceremonial services.
