Because of their elegant color and form, wisteria blossoms have been adored since the Nara period (710-94), first by the aristocracy and then eventually and repeatedly making appearances in literature as well as art. Along with pine trees, bush clover (J., hagi), and similar motifs, they have occurred in Japanese mirror patterns from the very earliest periods.
