The handle-part of this Hempei-chu type bronze bell is designed as an Asayugi-patterned narrow belt, surrounded by two other decorative belts and is longer suited for its original function of suspending the bell. The oblique lines within the saw-toothed patterns in the Chu and Hire areas are drawn in the same direction. There are four lines under the horizontal belt which decorates the saw-toothed patterns of the body part; a horizontal line is added at the joint section of Asayugi patterns in the Mai area. These characteristics indicate that this piece id a relatively new Hempei-chu type of bronze bell. Six sections on the surface, divided by the horizontal and vertical belts and the skirt of the body, were polished carefully after the casting had been completed. It was probably a shining, red-copper color in the beginning.
