Dotaku Bell with Flowing Water Design

Museum No.
JK232

Dotaku, the village ceremonial bronze bell, was kept buried in the hillside sanctuary, away from the everyday activities of life, to be dug out for use in certain agricultural rituals. The distribution of dotaku and its molds are confined to the Kinai (Kyoto-Osaka) district and the Inland Sea coast. The flowing-water (or maze) pattern on this specimen, also found on the pottery of the area, are characteristic design motifs of the mid-Yayoi Period.
