A costume doll (J., ishô ningyô) refers to dolls dressed in Heian court costume consisting of broad, open-sleeved robes and a pleated back apron; when a gosho ningyô (Imperial doll) is dressed in court robes, it is called a "costumed Imperial doll."

This young woman wears a garment reminiscent of Okinawa bingata, a type of stenciled dyeing. The slight gesture of lifting her hand to her hair lends the doll expression. It was created by Okamoto Shôtarô (1895-1980), a famous doll maker and fourth generation of the Mentake line.
