This characteristic design seems to have been popular during the Kanbun Era; a quite similar design was introduced in the On-Hiinagata style-book of 1667. According to the notes in the style-book, the sharp radial lines represent palm leaves. It is very rare that both the real dress and its illustration have been preserved. A dress made for use during the summer season, it is decorated with thick embroidery reflecting the taste of those days. An interesting property is that the stitches of the embroidery extend over the seam where the design overlaps the seam.
