This uchikake (formal outer robe) is drawn with scenes rich in seasonal implication centering on various yearly events, such balls for Boy's Day (J., tango no sekku, fifth day of the fifth month), chrysanthemums for chôyô no sekku (ninth day of the ninth month), and meandering water banquets from Girl's Day (jôshi no sekku, third day of the third month). The theme has a particularly Kyoto-like elegance. The realistic, detail of the yûzen-dyed design, the painterly expression apparent everywhere, the fine embroidery, and the overall subdued coloring are all characteristics of the late Edo (1615-1868) to early Meiji period (1868-1912). In the blue used for part of the running water in the hem area one can detect what appears to be an early use of chemical dyes.
