This seemingly incongruous combination of plum and quivers (arrow holders) has literary origins. In the war chronicle Genpei seisuiki (The Rise and Fall of the Genji and the Heike), the general Kajiwara Kagesue cuts a fragrant branch of blossoming plum and inserts it into his quiver. On the battlefield, he amazes the enemy Heike forces with his elegance.
