The Tale of Sumiyoshi tells of how a princess, the daughter of a Middle Counselor, had to flee to the nunnery at Sumiyoshi to escape the wrath of her evil stepmother, who was jealous of her relationship with a Minor Captain of the Fourth Rank. In time, the Minor Captain is mystically guided to Sumiyoshi by the Kannon (Avalokitesvara) of Hase, and the two reunite and return to the capital of Kyoto to live happily ever after. Although there are variations of this tale, in this version, the actual text itself is extremely short, focusing on the narrative paintings.
