To create a stencil, hand-made Japanese paper is treated with persimmon juice before a design is cut with the tip of a tool. The tool tips come in a variety of shapes according to which the patterns are classified. Those designs made with a rounded punch tool are referred to as kiri komon. Designs created from round dots are the most classical among the komon designs.
