This wedding robe for a young woman from a merchant family is done entirely with intricate “fawn-spot” tie-dyeing (kanoko shibori). Each row is perfectly aligned—a feat of skilled craftsmanship. So luxurious was this technique that sumptuary laws sometimes even banned its production.
