The name “Gosho doll” dates only to the Meiji period. In the preceding Edo period (1615–1868) such dolls were known by various names, most of which referenced their white color or large heads. These wooden dolls coated with layers of gofun (shell white) were sometimes used as gifts from the court to provincial daimyo lords.
