Scattered among bamboo fences and plum blossoms are the characters from a phrase in a poem wishing for longevity: "The sun and the moon never set in the eastern fence."
The hedge (or fence) is usually paired with chrysanthemums, as these famous lines from Tao Qian's poem, "Drinking Wine": "From the eastern hedge, I pluck chrysanthemum flowers / And idly look towards the southern hills." However, here plum blossoms are used instead.
Celebratory intent is shown by using plum blossoms, and thus distancing the work from the original Chinese poem.
