This kosode kimono is embellished with the Grand Shrine of Sumiyoshi, a small boat near the shore, and a court carriage. The motif can be read as referring either to the “Miotsukushi” Chapter from The Tale of Genji, or to the Noh play “Pilgrimage to Sumiyoshi” (Sumiyoshi mōde). It is a fine example of a poetic convention known as goshodoki, in which references to classical literature are hidden within the landscape.
