The combination of rabbits and horsetail seen in this kosode kimono derives from a Japanese waka poem about the autumn moon. In this, the moon, which in East Asia is believed to be inhabited by a rabbit, is described as beautifully shining as if polished with horsetail. The plant has been traditionally used to polish objects made from wood.
