Tsuji Kakô (1870-1931) studied under the famous Kyoto painter Kôno Bairei (1844-95) with Kikuchi Hôbun (1862-1918) and Takeuchi Seihô (1864-1942). Stylistically, Bairei’s works are either dynamic and vigorous or steady in composition. Kakô is thought to have taken after the latter style as seen in this painting of the quintessential Chinese poet Li Bai (also known as Li Bo; 701-762).
