A military-fan-shaped frame is fixed onto a base which looks like an uchidenokozutsu(a mallet of luck). This is a truly unique work in which 84 different lacquered panels are set within the frame on the front and back. It is believed to have been submitted to the fourth Domestic Industrial Exposition in 1895 (Meiji 28). It was made by Hashimoto Ichizô II, a lacquered scabbard maker in the Edo period. Lacquered scabbard makers, who lost their jobs because of the decree banning the wearing of swords, were forced to struggle with the times to find new directions by making utensils for the tea ceremony, using their skill of lacquering bamboo patterns and producing works to submit to expositions.
